Our votes for president are NOT equal. We can fix that! (part 2, the solutions)
So what’s the good news about this Electoral College (EC) business??
First, the EC only applies to the president, not candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives. And their role is super important, too. So at least turn out to vote for them!
Next, there are many plans that could modify or banish the EC:
- A state’s EC votes don’t have to be cast in a block (“Winner Take All”). States can choose to cast their EC votes in a way that represents the state’s voters more equally. For instance, in 2016, Maine cast three EC votes for the Democratic candidate, and one for the Republican candidate.
- If three-quarters of states agree, the Constitution can be amended to delete the EC.
- The “National Popular Vote Interstate Compact” is an agreement among states to cast their EC votes to match the popular vote. For the compact to have legal force, it must include enough states to cover 270 electoral votes.
- We could expand the House of Representatives. We’ve been stuck at 435 Representatives since 1913 (when our population was much, much smaller). If we increase the numbers, more populated states would get more Representatives (and more EC votes). This could happen if more states ratified the Congressional Apportionment Amendment.
Many of these solutions start at the state level, so –
DON’T GIVE UP! VOTE IN PEOPLE WHO WILL WORK TO MAKE OUR VOTING MORE EQUAL!! WORK ON YOUR STATE LEVEL TO MODIFY OR BANISH THE EC!
