Our House of Representatives elections are often SKEWED. We can fix that!
We used to vote directly for our Representatives. Each state voted “at large,” which meant all votes were counted together. And the elected officials represented everyone in the state. The vote was reasonably proportional, because Representatives from both parties were elected in proportion to the votes cast.
In 1967, that all changed. A congressional act split states into geographical districts. Now only one Representative can be elected from each district. (Except single-Representative states, who still get to vote “at large.”) Districting has some benefits (for instance, your Representative may be more tuned in to local events). But it also has an unfortunate result: ridiculous “gerrymandering” as some party members work desperately to carve out districts that are almost guaranteed to elect a candidate from their party. The vote is no longer proportional, it’s artificially created.
One solution is “PROPORTIONAL REPRESENTATION.” There’s a variety of ways to set this up, but they all have the same benefit: district boundaries become less relevant, and the vote of every individual becomes more relevant.
The FAIR REPRESENTATION ACT and FOR THE PEOPLE ACT OF 2019 are bills introduced by House Democrats, that will put more proportional representation in place.
Contact your House Representatives and ask them if they support these Acts. Tell them you want fair representation for everyone now!
